Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our custom needle felted pet portraits.
How long does it take to make a portrait?
Each portrait is 100% handmade and takes 15–40 hours of actual crafting time, depending on the size you choose. Including approval and shipping, total turnaround is typically 2–3 weeks for Mini, 3–5 weeks for Standard, and 4–6 weeks for Deluxe. We work on one portrait at a time to ensure your piece gets our full attention.
Will it really look like my pet?
Yes — that’s the whole point. We study your photos carefully to match your pet’s unique markings, fur colors, eye shape, and even the subtle tilt of their head. Before we ship, we send you detailed photos for approval. If anything isn’t right, we revise it — free of charge. Our goal is a portrait you’ll recognize instantly.
What photos do I need to provide?
We recommend at least 5–8 clear, high-resolution photos: a straight-on front view showing both eyes, both side profiles, a top-down view of the back/head, and close-ups of any unique markings or features. Natural daylight works best — please avoid heavy filters or flash photography. See our How to Order page for full photo guidelines.
What materials do you use?
We use 100% Australian Merino wool — the finest wool for needle felting — known for its softness, long fibers, and rich color saturation. Portraits also feature hand-selected glass eyes, internal wire armatures for structure (Deluxe tier), and solid wood or acrylic display bases. Every material is archival quality.
Can you make a portrait of a pet that has passed away?
Absolutely — and this is one of the most meaningful things we do. Many of our customers come to us after losing a beloved companion. We treat these projects with extra care and sensitivity. As long as you have clear photos, we can create a lasting tribute. This is actually why Wool Forever was founded in the first place.
Can you do multiple pets in one portrait?
Yes! We can create portraits with 2 or more pets in a single scene or diorama. This option is available with our Deluxe tier. The price depends on the number of pets, the complexity of the scene, and the level of detail required. Contact us for a custom quote.
What is your return and refund policy?
Because each portrait is a custom, handmade piece created specifically for you, we generally do not accept returns or offer refunds. However, we stand behind our work: we provide a photo approval step before shipping, and if you’re not satisfied, we’ll revise until you are. If your portrait arrives damaged during shipping, we’ll repair or replace it at no cost. Full details on our Shipping & Returns page.
Do you ship internationally? How much does shipping cost?
Yes, we ship worldwide! Shipping is free within the United States. International shipping costs vary by destination and are calculated at checkout. All shipments include tracking and insurance. International customers are responsible for any customs duties or import taxes. See our Shipping & Returns page for details.
How do I care for my wool portrait?
Wool portraits are delicate art pieces. Keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and display them in a dry environment away from humidity and moisture. Dust gently with a soft, dry brush or compressed air. Avoid touching the wool surface excessively. When cared for properly, your portrait will last a lifetime.
Can you make portraits of animals other than dogs and cats?
Yes! While dogs and cats are our most common subjects, we’ve created portraits of rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, horses, and even reptiles. If you have clear reference photos, we can likely create a portrait of your pet regardless of species. Contact us with your specific request.
